NASA’s Swift Observatory confirmed a tidal disruption event (TDE) where a million-solar-mass black hole tore apart a star more than 30,000 light-years from its host galaxy’s center, 750 million light-years away. Detected initially by ZTF in late 2025 via AI flagging, the flare peaked at the brightness of 10 billion suns in UV, outshining the galaxy temporarily. Spectra and temperature data (~30,000°C) ruled out alternatives.

Supermassive black holes typically reside at galactic cores; prior TDEs were core-centered. This “orphan” event, one of few confirmed off-center, likely results from a galaxy merger ejecting or carrying the black hole outward. It validates searching outskirts for hidden black holes using wide-field surveys.

Key uncertainties include the black hole’s exact origin—triple merger kick or ongoing dwarf galaxy merger—and how common such wanderers are. Swift observations are paused for an orbit boost; future Rubin and Roman telescopes should yield larger samples to census displaced black holes.

Laser-Driven “Electron Lighthouse” Steers Currents Without Fields

University of Michigan researchers demonstrated a semiconductor device using two phase-coherent laser colors to generate and directionally steer a narrow electron beam via quantum interference, without applied electric fields. Polarization rotation sweeps the beam like a lighthouse. The effect arises from interfering absorption pathways that reinforce electrons in one direction while canceling others.
